International New Music Being Released March 15th, 2010 – Dash Berlin-United Destination Marcus Schössow – Andy Duguid feat. Emma Hewitt-Light

armadamusic youtube channel writes:

To be released: 15th of March 2010

As the lights fade and the volume rises, the dance scene awakes. They gather in big groups to share their belief, no matter what nationality or ethnicity. Theyre all here for the same reason. Music is the unifying factor, an unspoken language common to all. Dash Berlin welcomes you to the nocturnal society. Dash Berlin:We are all connected by sound. The place where we celebrate tonight, is our United Destination 2010.

The Dash Berlin sound has reached deep into the heart of the dance scene and far across the EDM places of this world. It all started three years ago, when first single Till The Sky Falls Down turned the heads and popped the ears. Today, front man Jeffrey Suttorius is the proud owner of Aropa Records and looks back to a slew of chart-scorching releases, such as Man On The Run and Waiting. Both tracks are nominated for this years International Dance Music Awards and can be found on the Dash Berlin debut artist album The New Daylight. Following in 2010, we find the first Dash Berlin mix-compilation, United Destination 2010.

Dash Berlin mixed and compiled United Destination 2010 with the thought in mind that every single member of the dance society shares one particular passion. Its that feeling of togetherness, of being one, that shaped this album. Driven by the sound, we all go to the one place where its all about the music: the United Destination 2010. With the true Dash Berlin sound as their guide, listeners will be taken in at the very moment they press play. Exclusive tracks, new remixes and a diverse sound will take them on a journey to one and the same destination: United Destination 2010.

Sexual aggression: cultural norms and changing them

Given the heated conversations here over the last few days, I suggest that there is a core problem, a cultural problem, which I submit could be an insurmountable obstacle to any resolution of less that some number of generations.

The cultural norm — and I welcome criticisms of how I put this, but I would welcome even more some assistance in clarifying this — is that men are the sexual aggressors, and a woman who even appears to be sexually aggressive is giving default consent to every man who encounters her.

This is not an indictment of male-female relations. This is an attempt to describe a subtle force in human nature that resists objective analysis.

Consider the stereotypes under which we struggle. Consider that while they are reprehensible (at best), they may have a root in that subtle force.

The man claims “she asked for it!” not because it is true, but because he wants it to be true. We push women to spend more and more time on their personal appearance, but reserve the privilege of labeling them sluts if they deviate from an ever-changing list of acceptable “fashions”; in the meantime, men are surrounded by a constant, visual vista of sexual signals. A self-assured woman is an extra-attractive challenge to men who are sure that there is a submissive woman in there somewhere begging for a real man to find her.

These and other examples are extreme, but they are also common enough to deserve examination and explanation. No connotation of condoning such behavior is necessitated by a search for an explanation.

There is a short way to put this. It begs many questions, but I submit it is the best — indeed, only valid — starting point: Our culture defines the roles of men and women, and the conflicts and tensions we see, experience and comment on here and elsewhere are a direct consequence of individuals and groups deviating from those cultural definitions.

It’s not enough to criticize these consequences. It is not enough to loudly support such individuals and groups. There is a very short threshold where activism fails to offer the emotional support they need. That is a lesson I’ve learned from my homosexual friends, many of whom (the older ones, of my generation) have stopped paying attention to the activists because they are not saying what my friends see the need to be said. These friends have found their balance, their resting place outside the cultural norms, the surcease of the constant tension. They still don’t have equality under the law, they still face discrimination and verbal violence, they still become victims of physical violence. But not so much any more, not often enough to justify the valid paranoia of their past. They see themselves — as I perceive this — at a further point along their particular evolution from normative deviants to culturally normative in their own right. There are no on-off switches in their journey.

I believe that the logical consequence of these observations is that we will not see a resolution to the sexual aggression dilemma in our lifetimes. There is no turning point to be seen. It is a gradual evolution from one part of the spectrum to another part. It will need to become embedded in our culture because it will replace what is already there. No amount of legislation will accomplish that.

My personal, anecdotal perspective supports the notion that we have progressed. I and my siblings never struggled with the sexual tensions that our parents faced. Our children have even greater latitude than we had. Our numbers have steadily, if slowly, increased over these three generations of which I have partaken personally. We have also witnessed the negative side of that evolution, the backlash, the continued efforts of the entrenched patriarchy to hang on to their reins. We have also seen the opposite backlash, the attempts to fight control with replacement controls, equally problematic, equally doomed to see opposition sooner or later.

I am certain, in my heart, as a male, that part of the problem is the attempt to impose on us changes in our expectations after we have become adult males with our varying but ubiquitous desire to find a mate.

I don’t mean to condone the bad behaviors of some of my fellows, nor would I presume to explain them away as something we all just have to expect. I do mean to suggest that our primary efforts must be with our children, raising boys to see their natural sexual impulses as normal in a context of mutual consent, where uncertainty is a no because it is also not a yes, in a normative expectation that they must pay attention to everything the desired mate is saying and not just those signals they want to see. And, we must raise our girls to see male sexual aggression as normal, but not the expectation of consent, and we must teach them the skills to say no when they are sure of it, but to also clearly express uncertainty. Last but not least, we must also recognize and accept as unfortunate that some parents will continue to raise their boys and girls under that patriarchal set of normative roles.

There are plenty of additional details to be expressed, I’m sure.

Bears

Apparently ecologists have compiled a draft report that considers the re-introduction of bears into Britain. (*)

What a marvelous idea! I mean seriously, what could possibly go wrong?

Not only are bears a ‘huge draw for tourism’, they’re also expected to take an active interest in the processing of household garbage that would otherwise go uncollected for two weeks.

(*) Considers — and then rejects the idea. But if the Telegraph doesn’t let the facts get in the way of a good lede, then fuck it, why should I?

Tempo-Pace Training

Tempo Pace Training is a really wonderful way of pushing yourself at an intensity hard enough,
yet achievable.

Pair it together with the calculated intensity based on VO2 Max  of around 73% for a 9:50 2.4km finisher and you’ll know that the training is a potent one that is specific to your ability.

Running at this intensity meant that we clock a distance of no less than 3.65km in 20 min, but this pace would be seemingly difficult to achieve without that training partner, your accountability partner who works just as hard with you. Without him/her, you probably would have thrown in the white flag when it became tough.

Over the past week, i’ve been able to bring my significant other along for a good 15min jog. It felt wonderful to be able to do things together. Why wait, get your running shoes ready, and together with your whoever you choose, complete whatever distance you set out to do together!

Show Us Your Teeth: Tuned-On! Top 30 #320 – March 1/10

Could Lady GaGa get her first #1 on this chart?  While Mika’s “Rain” reigns steadily with former #1 “Delusional” by Simon Curtis right in tow, “Teeth” by Lady GaGa charges 12-3 to become her biggest hit on this chart, surpassing the #4 peak of “Bad Romance” and the current #4 position of “Speechless”.  It’s really hard to say what’s my favourite song from The Fame Monster, I could pick and choose between the three and be very happy.  Not to take away anything from “Teeth” (whose King5kat remix is outstanding) or even “Bad Romance”, but there are other challengers that could get to #1 too…

Also new to the Top 10 besides “Teeth” are Blake Lewis’ retro happiness of “Heartbreak On Vinyl” and “Pick Up The Phone”, the plea from the dancefloor by Dragonette.  But just outside of the Top 10 is our first debut, and it’s the highest one in quite some time.

I lumped Penguin Prison’s “Something I’m Not” in with last week’s highlighted song, but the tune has grown immensely on me during the last week to make it one of this year’s must have records.  And the great part of it all is that it’s a free download!  Chris Glover has a massive talent up his sleeve, and it’s too bad Interscope Records didn’t take him up on it as cited in this excellent story about him.  I’m not sure if “Something I’m Not” can get to #1 next week, but it will give it the old college try!  Do check it out – you will miss something special from this talented singer/producer/remixer otherwise!

Next, I have to comment about Evan Taubenfeld’s terrific track “Starbucks Girl”.  Because of its connection to Starbucks, and Evan’s fans’ reaction to his use of autotune, the song has been pulled from the Welcome To The Blacklist Club CD and is no longer available as a free download.  And that’s a damn shame.  As is, “Starbucks Girl” has immense appeal, and the excellent, simple video expands on that appeal.  Sure, I said that I’d like a version without the autotune too, but to no longer make the original version available is a mystery to me.  Watch the video yourself and decide!  The song still moves up 25-20 on the chart!!

The chart is full of massive activity this week.  P!nk’s Grammy performance of “Glitter In The Air” is her best record in more than 6 or 7 years, and debuts at #23.  New Yorker Javi, of Puerto Rican and Panamanian background, debuts at #24 with the gorgeous European-sounding Monsieur Adi remix of “Situation” .  UK’s Example could give Calvin Harris a run for his money with “Won’t Go Quietly” at #25.  This song may seem a little static at first but it really grows on you.  Then blog-darling Ellie Goulding arrives at #26 with “Starry Eyed”, which has many remixes (including one by Penguin Prison), but my preference is for the shimmering retro Monarchy remix.  Justin Nozuka’s fans light up this blog as his new CD You I Wind Land and Sea gets closer to release.  ”My Heart Is Yours” bows at #27.  And finally, Vampire Weekend enters the chart at #28 with “Cousins”.  The indie band scored a #1 Billboard album with Contra a few weeks back.

One last piece of housekeeping:  I don’t think I’ve mentioned it since I started this blog last Fall.  I have one rule on my personal chart.  Songs must leave the chart after 10 appearances (20 weeks).  This allows a fresh rotation of songs to occur, but it doesn’t prevent them from re-entering at a later date, though this doesn’t happen very often.  Both Mika’s “Blame It On The Girls” and Dan Black’s “Alone” left the chart this week for this reason.

Have a great week and let’s see your comments :)

Things I Love: February 27, 2010

Note: Darlings, I have been on a blogging slump for the past few days. My deepest apologies – but with all the family activities and with free time, my brain atrophied and my typing fingers grew still! However, in the next few weeks expect some new content, as well as a lot of discussion about writing and publishing! Now onto the things I love love love this week…

Credit: We Heart It

Listening: Sugarcult, Palm Trees and Power Lines && Start Static – I had completely forgotten about this band, but they bring back some amazing memories of high school! Also bringing back some high school memories, Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Smile Empty Soul, Stone Sour, Buckcherry, and Savage Garden.

Reading: anything by or about Emily Dickinson, Susan B. Anthony, and Debbie Harry.

Loving ♥ ♥ ♥
♥ My new ankle boots – chic, sleek, and oh so cute. I love them so much that I want to wear them with just about every single piece of clothing I own.
♥ Writing two new poems. Still in the revision process, but I think once I trim the fat, they will possibly be convention-quality. Maybe next year? Definitely.
♥ Susan B. Anthony – can we talk about how much this woman rocked? In case you didn’t know, this woman was amazing and is a true hero – even if you aren’t American!
♥ The same goes for Emily Dickinson – a classic American poet that can teach all women a thing or two about passion and writing. She gets portrayed as a sickly spinster a lot, but in reality, she was a passionate, creative, and educated woman who wanted to dedicate herself to writing, so she feigned illness in order to avoid social events and spend more time writing.

♥ Let’s talk about how awesome the above picture is… I am so jealous of those sleeping bag jumps! It makes me want to go on a road trip with my besties and recreate this photo in a multitude of landscapes.
♥ Cupcakes. I can’t think of a single person who doesn’t love cupcakes – they are tiny, adorable cakes that can mean a multitude of things. Love. Acceptance. BFF. Simple joy. They are the perfect treat.
♥ My nephew. He will be a YEAR old on March 1st. This time last year, I had literally just returned to college after my February break and had had one week of Spring term when he was born – and I had to book a flight ASAP and get home to see him. He was so small, so cute. It seemed like my sister was pregnant longer than this year! However, it has been one of the best years of my life – not only was Chase born, but I had the internship of my dreams with CollegeFashion, I was published in my college’s literary magazine Naked Street, I was accepted to NULC twice, and I started Locked Out.
♥ Sunshine. It has been mostly sunny for the past week and I love it. Skirts without tights, flats without socks, tank tops without cardigans (okay, maybe not that far!) Either way, it has been sunny enough to shed a layer or two and I love it!

What do you love this week?

Ellie Goulding – Lights (March 1st 2010, Parlophone)

glittery ‘n junk

I’ve been following the happenings and progress of Ellie Goulding for some time now, watching her go from a young girl from Hereford with a head full of modest songs to pop-princess stardom of which the likes of Little Boots and various others have achieved in a relatively short time.

Produced by 21-year-old Starsmith, AKA Fin Dow-Smith, a Surrey University grad, he worked with Goulding over the last year to inject a bit of pop electro into things. And it’s quite a move from the original tracks I heard all those months ago. This is definite a commercial album, but it seems to have a little more soul and passion than most. Plus, this girl can actually sing, which is always good in today’s sea of auto tune.

Goulding has had a fair wack of success so far, with the first single Under The Sheets creating waves in the music world, and she even got chosen for the BRITs Critics Choice, and put on any ‘Top 10 of 2010′ list you can think of.

One of the nice things about this album is the mix of delicate electronics elements, like interesting vocal looping and reversing, shifting between down tempo verses to big, dance lead choruses, all backed up by Ellies huge vocal range, which she makes full use of

Wish I Stayed was one of my favourite tracks from the original EP, and although it has been re-recorded for the album, I still prefer the original, as the whistles-and-bells version seems to draw away from the tender, low key feel of the original recording. The album is a good mix of the big singles like Starry Eyed, to the heart-felt The Writer, which has a killer intro. The only criticisms I could make on this album would be that they do start to sound very similar, in terms of song structure, but if they’ve got a system going on, then why change things up?

Watch out for Fins debut-solo album, coming out in the next year, which is sure to feature some great electro numbers.

The single, Starry Eyed, is out through the various places now.
