spilled milk

I think all my green tea drankin’ helped my throat some. It was much better this morning, so here’s hoping it does not come back to throw a wrench in my weekend plans!

Breakfast on the fly:

[and up high, on the counter.]

Funny story, I was eating my breakfast driving down the road [like I do most days] and when I finished the cereal I set the bowl in the floor [passenger side!] I got like ten feet down the road and went to stop at the light and my entire bowl flipped forward and spilt all over the floor. My breakfast is wreaking havoc on my floor mats! Perhaps I should start getting up earlier so I can eat breakfast at a table like normal people.

Lunch was a salad [loving those lately!]

with a fake ‘chikin’ patty.

DSC_0158

Funky, yet edible.

Not many hours later I dined upon my favorite Larabar [because they do not carry the PB&J ‘round these parts. Curses!]

DSC_0162

Like a pie, it is. Yum.

After work I proceeded to go to the gym and sweat. Cause I hear that’s what you do there. I did.

Starving for dinner, I cooked up this lovely:

Fooling you into thinking I eat at that table, when in fact I have not eaten there since I moved in.

Stirfry:

  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • brown rice
  • tofu
  • peas

‘Twas delicious. I am quite the culinary genius, even if that was not actually very genius, but quite simple.

Fruit salad for dessert:

  • pineapple
  • grapes
  • strawberries

Watching my nightly dose of Idol. LOVED Danny Gokey’s performance!!! You guys know I love my country.

National Nutrition Month Marks the Coming of Spring!

The launch of National Nutrition month is sponsored by the American Dietetic Association. Take this opportunity to spring into healthy eating habits, while planning ways to get in some physical activity with better weather on the way. By thinking ahead, you can drop those extra pounds and improve your overall health in preparation for enjoying some fun in the sun this summer. You can supplement your healthy eating with natural multiple vitamins, including nutritional supplements such as anti-aging tonics, containing resveratrol, the ingredient in red wine that helps keep your arteries clear and slows the progress of AGE proteins at the cellular level. There’s a product called VIVIX10X Stronger than Resveratrol Alone that is 10x stronger than resveratrol alone.

Eating healthy can be simple -we’ve heard it all before! But, a reminder can be helpful to include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy, as well as lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts in your daily meal and snacking menu. Just remember to avoid saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (when you can) and added sugars.

Here’s a quick tip to help busy moms and dads snack “well” while on the go, at work, or while commuting. When you do your food shopping, pick up a vegetable party tray and every day grab a handful and put them in a baggy so you’ll have something healthy to turn to when hunger strikes!! And we all know, when it strikes and we don’t have a healthy snack handy, we head for the “machine” for salty snacks or sweet treats. Fruits and veggies are a much better choice.

Keep some whole grain cereals and crackers handy for snacking or to incorporate into your lunch or break.  If you’re a yogurt lover, keep a variety of flavors in your fridge for an easy grab on the way out the door, with your baggy of veggies!

Although many of us find it hard to get enough fruits and vegetables, with a little creativity, it’s really not hard to incorporate them into our daily eating habits. Try topping off your pizza with your favorite fresh veggies. Instead of having chips with your favorite dip or low-fat dressing, replace them with crunchy veggies, or add some tasty vegetables to your omelet. (Have you heard enough yet about vegetables?)

Make a point of adding fruit to your breakfast. Even if you grab a frozen waffle on the run, you can take a piece of fruit to enjoy along with it. You can also whip up a Cinch Meal Replacement Shake by Shaklee in 30 seconds. Please copy and paste this link into your browser  http://globalhealthnwealth.myshaklee.com/us/en/category.php?main_cat=WeightManagement&sub_cat=CinchShakes for info on this complete meal for breakfast or lunch. It’ll have your taste buds wanting a shake everyday! So easy, and soooo delicious. (Also a good source of fiber and protein which will keep you feeling satisfied. Also contains Luceine to help you maintain lean muscle.)

Keep calories in check by focusing on foods that are nutrient rich. Choose foods that are lower in calories and rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients. Take the time to read food labels. Portion size is also a key factor. Don’t go overboard by eating portions that are larger that you need, even when eating low-calorie foods.

When time is tight and you have to eat on the run, you can still make healthy choices from restaurant menus. Check the menu for indications of calorie content. Foods that are baked, braised, broiled, grilled, poached, roasted or steamed are likely to be lower in both calories and fat. Avoid fried, buttered, creamed, crispy and breaded items. You could share your meal with a friend, family member, or co-worker. You can even choose to order a child-sized portion. In addition, ask your server to hold the bread or chips until your meal is served to prevent pre-meal munching. If the temptation of dessert is too much, consider asking your server for extra forks to share the dessert with everyone at the table.

A healthy lifestyle is a balance between eating a healthy diet and getting some exercise. About 30 minutes of daily physical activity will go a long way in helping you keep fit. Maintaining the balance for a healthy lifestyle is the best way to achieve weight management and overall good health and fitness. Fizzy Free in Humboldt Park

Yeah, that’s right.  We’re back on the 30 days kick.  This time instead of a new artsy fartsy picture every day, we (myself and some lucky others included) have decided to give up soda… pop… coke…non-alcoholic carbonated beverages for a month. It is straight up no fun. I hate it. I’m miserable without my caffeine and high fructose corn syrup.  However, this was a definite topper to the other suggestion for the month of March, which was: Going vegan.  Might have to build up to that one and/or never attempt that in my life. You know yer boy ain’t eatin’ no tofu, SON.  I know we all have our vices in life, but mine happens to be Diet Coke.  These past few harrowing days have given me a chance to reflect on why I love my sweet fizzy nectar:

1. cheaper than beer (sometimes. Peebers to the rescue.)

2. zero calories (do you know how many calories you drink from regular coke/beer/gatorade/i can’t believe it’s not butter spray? Too much is the answer you were looking for.)

3. caffeine (nuff said, right there. Most powerful drug in the world, last time I checked my opinions.)

4. water is boring. (needs more high fructose corn syrup.)

I’ve also begun to think how I take my liquid gold.  I prefer the fountain coke, thank you. Any fast food joint ought to provide a proper beverage dispenser with a limitless amount on tap, literally.  Unless those greedy goons hide it behind the counter and fill your cup 80% full of ice. Hate those places. I’m looking at you, Long John Silvers.  For those that don’t hog it all, I commend you on your generosity.  There’s something about that instant mix of C2O and syrup that just makes everything right in the world. My backup is the canned variety. Never do I ever go for the plastic 20 oz. Big mistake right there.  Too much drink and it tastes weird out of plastic. Just don’t even attempt it. Apologies to all that have ventured down that awful road.  And if you’ve even had an inkling of a thought about the 1 or 2 liter, litre, leeter? sizes, you’re crazy dude. People that buy 1 liter diet cokes have a serious drinking problem. Also, 2 liter diet coke bottles are terrible. No one can get to through the entire bottle without the last 1/3 being flat and disgusting.  Just no.

This pictorial should be self explanatory. If not, then you lose.

So wish me luck during this terribly frightening venture. I hope I come out clean on the other side.  There’s a small chance I’ll come out on the other end with no dependency on caffeine.  There’s also a chance that I’ll sell all of my earthly possessions and run away to join the circus, but let’s be honest with ourselves.

On a completely unrelated but somehow also awesome topic, I have officially moved into my own place.  I live in Humboldt Park now. It’s awesome. Did I mention how awesome it is? Just checking. I have two roommates who both seem to be solid guys. We haven’t had a sleepover yet where we do each other’s hair, but I have to imagine that will come up in conversation soon.  Just biding my time.  Also, my commute to work is about 13 minutes. That equals sleeping in more, which last time I checked, equals a gigantic WIN. If you are unfamiliar with what I’m talking about, please see the previous post.

That’s all for now, check back in later on. Or whenever you’ve exhausted every other possible form of productivity killing.

Back From The Land Of The Lost

B. sent me a message yesterday asking why I haven’t been writing here lately, and co-incidentally, AgingInferno commented on this old post and asked where my subscription section was (it’s there now by the way). I don’t have a good reason for not writing lately. I’ve just been in a cold weather funk I guess. Today, the sun is shining and I’m starting to feel like spring really is just around the corner. I guess a little catching up is in order here.

I’ve been only slightly busy at work and when I’m not working, I’m hibernating at home. I never did get back on track with my virtues or any part of the whole big plan that I listed there (well maybe I’m a little more organized than before).  Little E. lost his first tooth last month and got a whopping two bucks from the tooth fairy! He and K.K. had their first visit to the dentist last week. Little E. did pretty good with the cleaning but did not like the x-ray portion of the visit. K.K. was a completely different story. B. said that she screamed her little lungs out during the cleaning to the point that she was shaking and sweating by the time it was all done. Of course, when it was over, she was a happy camper again.

Last week I started a diet. I really need to lose some weight. Alright, more than “some”. More than that though, I need to make healthier food choices. In the last couple of weeks, I cut out my sweet tea and cut down to 1 or 2 cups of coffee. What a huge difference that makes in my daily calories! I’m actually having trouble eating enough food.

B. told me about the Livestrong.com website where I can track every single food I eat. It’s FANTASTIC! I’ll post more about that later.

Speaking of B. and the family, I haven’t seen them in two months. TWO MONTHS!! I’m so excited that they are coming up for a visit this weekend!

So, that’s what I’ve been up to lately. Riveting isn’t it?

Day 60: National Procrastination Week

I’d planned to get back into working out this week and start cooking dinner at home instead of going out every night, but then I discovered it’s National Procrastination Week. I’ll start next week.

But today’s post celebrates 60 days of this blog. Let’s take a look back and see what I’ve accomplished in the first 60 days, shall we?

– I lost 3 pounds.
– I regained those 3 pounds. Then lost them again. Then regained. Then . . . yeah. I’m getting nowhere fast.
– I started physical therapy for a rotator cuff tear and tendonitis.
– Because of said rotator cuff issue, I’ve been told by my therapist to temporarily stop cycling, doing kettlebells, playing pool, carrying my camera equipment or lifting anything else with that arm.

So the first 60 days didn’t turn out even close to the way I had expected.

But I’ve discovered a lot of good cycling information through other blogs I enjoy visiting. I’ve also met a number of interesting cycling folks through your blogs and by your comments left here on my blog. I appreciate everyone’s visits, feedback and encouragement. I look forward to hearing more from you in the upcoming months.

Today’s starting weight: 151

Food journal:

Breakfast:
– Organic whole wheat english muffin with Nutella = 294 cal.

Lunch:
– Low fat PB&J on whole wheat = 398
– Small bag Rold Gold pretzels = 230
– Iced tea = 0

Dinner:
– Salad with ranch dressing = 163
– Soft pretzel = 483
– Iced tea = 0

Snack:
– Fat free chocolate pudding cup = 60

Thanks for visiting. I’m promising myself (and you) that the next 60 days will be more eventful and will get me closer to my goals. See you tomorrow.

Plan In Place… Time For Results

I’ve been struggling with my weight for quite some time now.  As of last night, I’ve got a plan in place to fix it.  Now that I’ve got a definitive plan I’m very optimistic about the potential for success.  I weighed 227.0 this morning and I’m hoping that if I stick to what I’ve laid out below I’ll be well on my way to sub 200!

The Plan

  1. Limit carbs to less than 30 grams per day
  2. Workout at least 3 days per week
  3. No snacking after 9:00 PM
  4. At least 5 glasses of water per day
  5. Eat breakfast every day

Time will tell if this will be a successful plan, but I think it addresses quite a few things that have kept me from being successful in the past.

Daily Diet:

Breakfast:  water, coffee, fruit yogurt cup, slice of Blaine’s bread w/real homemade butter

Lunch:  1/2 Italian breaded/herb pork chop (leftover from Sunday’s Dinner), carrots, rice, salad and mineral water.

In Between:  a few sips of coffee – too busy

Dinner:  6″ sub sandwich w/tomato, mustard & mayo, chips, cookie and 1/2 a Pepsi – dinner was held for a local event that the public school and library were a part of – I was there to represent the library and talk with the middle schoolers.  We had a company come in and present the play The Red Badge of Courage – it was fantastic and very age appropriate.

And…had a glass of wine and will follow up with a glass of water to sip on before hitting the hay!

Today’s Goals:

At Home:

Work on emails, facebook page (personal and library), send out invites to upcoming events, 30 minutes of exercise and the usual tidy.

At Work:

Last minute details for the evening’s events…Evening meeting with the school on a program the library will be working with them on this summer and during the following school year…Had a great turnout for the Youth Chess Club!!  I was hoping for that!…I can’t tell you how great it was to be at the school and talking with the kids, making plans for the program this summer and for the new school year!  I am psyched!…We had the drawing today for the weekly winners (Winter Reading Program) and I had one mom approach me telling me how much she appreciated us doing the program.  It had encouraged her son, who did not have a huge desire to read, to read!  I was floating high after hearing that!  That comment just made my day!  It made all the effort and preplanning and the craziness of the past few months, worth it!  :)

After all of that…I came home, made cupcakes and green (deviled) eggs for tomorrow’s events!!!  ;)

Today’s Outfit:

Multi-colored top (thrift)

Belt (thrift)

Black pencil skirt (Target)

Black mules (WM)

Turquoise drop earrings, silver rope necklace, silver charm bracelet, silver/gold watch and…

a spritz of perfume.

Conclusions:

I love this quote I found in More’s March 2010 issue…

Treat every day like you’re trying out for the job.

Can you imagine what our days would be like if we put that kind of attitude towards what we do?  No matter what that might be, working  inside our outside the home, do it as if you were trying out for the job!  ;)

Fake It Whilst You Make It

Preheating the oven, so I’m trying to knock a few things off my list while my ipod charges.

I gotta get some shit done tonight, little readership.
I have to do post this, do my exercise with some kind of whole heart and intensity, eat my dinner, drink some water, lay out my clothes.  Handle myself.

Today, thus far, has been kind of breezy.  Save the 2 protein bars for breakfast that I have absolutely no justification for other than OMG SWEET HUNGER BAD HABITS SPASMS.  I had half a sandwich for lunch and I worked my butt off today.  9-5, I didn’t take a break, ate at my desk…WORKED.

I don’t know why I’m so capslocky today.

I think I need to redefine why I’m doing this all of it.  Living so decisively and to plan.  I want to trust my body and love it and be building strength into it.  I want to fight for it.  I trust my body and love it and I exercise to build strength into it.  I fight for my body and for the a healthy form.  I sacrifice for it.

I’m doing this because it feels good to me.  Because I enjoy the struggle.  Because this isn’t good enough or comfortable enough to stop here.  Because I want to make people stop in their tracks.  Because life doesn’t have to be taken on an as is basis.  Because I have this soul that catches alight when it witnesses beauty, shares in goodness, participates in kindness, feels love and it deserves to be housed in a body worthy of lofty endeavors.  Because when I work out I re-convince myself that I’m powerful, deserving, and alive.  When I eat low carb and generally healthy, I regain clarity and find so much energy.  I calm down about a lot of minutiae that’s not important and is basically just draining me.

I like to like myself and face myself knowing that I’m at least giving myself a shot.  That I’m maybe on the pathless journey, but it’s a journey, it has a destination.  It has waystops.  It has benches and detours and days where you dilly-dally at a place just because it’s comfortable there.  But you’re…I…we…we’re going to get where we want to be.  We’re engaging ourselves in the process of eating less junk, drinking more water, moving our bodies and talking all the way through it.  Fuck yes, I know this post is obnoxious.  But I need to hear it.  I need to let the words pass through my fingertips that reiterate my worth and ability to make this happen.

Change versus inertia is the big heavyweight battle of my existence.  I can’t give a day over to disbelief.  I won’t  I can’t let the little pillar of desire start peeling and eroding away.  I will eat my dinner.  I will do the exercise. I will see a little change in the morning.  I will keep my blinders on and keep moving, with a little blue flame of faith burning until my soul catches that fire and lights back up.
